How to Put On a Lace Front Wig — A Step-by-Step UK Guide

Reading time: 6 minutes · Updated April 2026

Putting on a glueless lace front isn't difficult—it just has more steps than people expect. The goal is a "melted" look without the sticky residue. After fitting hundreds of glueless units in our London Salon, we've broken the process down into nine clear steps. This is the ultimate "get up and go" guide.

Why go glueless?

  • Daily Ease: Quicker (under 10 minutes) than a glued install.

  • Skin Health: Zero risk of allergic reactions to adhesives.

  • Edge Protection: Keeps your natural hairline safe from tension and chemicals.

  • Versatility: Take it off every night to let your scalp breathe.

What you'll need to put on a lace front wig

For the install:

  • Your glueless lace front wig (ideally with an adjustable elastic band)

  • Wig cap (nude or matching your skin tone—never black)

  • A rat-tail comb

  • Hair tie / clips for prepping natural hair

  • Curved nail scissors (if the lace isn't pre-trimmed)

  • Optional but recommended: A "Wig Grip" band (velvet or silicone) for extra security

For the "Melt":

  • A silk scarf or wide elastic "melt band"

  • Translucent setting powder (matching your skin tone)

  • A small fluffy makeup brush

Step 1: Prep your natural hair

Lace front wigs sit best on a flat base. Bumps in your natural hair create bumps in the wig.

  • Long hair: Cornrow it flat against your scalp. If cornrowing isn't your thing, do 4–6 flat twists around your head and pin them down securely.

  • Short hair: Slick it back with a little bit of edge control or gel, brushed flat.

  • Very short / shaved: Skip to Step 2.

Step 2: Put on the wig cap

Pull the wig cap down so it sits about a finger's width below where you want the lace front to start.

  • The Gold Rule: The cap must match your skin tone. A nude cap disappears; a black cap shows through the lace and ruins the illusion of a scalp.

  • Tuck any stray hairs underneath the edges.

Step 3: Positioning and Grip

If you are worried about the wig shifting, put on a Wig Grip band over your cap first.

  • Place the wig grip along your hairline. It uses friction to keep the wig from sliding back.

  • Hold the wig with both hands at the temples.

  • Tilt your head forward and slide the wig on from front to back.

  • Adjust it so the lace sits roughly ¼ inch (5–6 mm) above your natural hairline.

Step 4: Secure the straps and band

Turn the wig slightly inside out to find the adjustable straps and the thick elastic band.

  • The Straps: Hook them so the wig feels firm but doesn't give you a headache.

  • The Elastic Band: This is the "glue" of the glueless world. Position it so it sits at the nape of your neck. It pulls the lace flat against your forehead.

  • The Test: You should be able to shake your head "no" without the wig shifting.

Step 5: Trim the excess lace (If needed)

If your wig arrived pre-cut, skip this. If not:

  • Use curved nail scissors to get a more natural, jagged edge.

  • Cut in small zigzag motions rather than a straight line.

  • Leave about 1–2 mm of lace in front of the hair—cutting it too close can cause the hairs to shed or the edge to fray.

Step 6: The "Elastic Band Melt"

Even without glue, you want the lace to look like it’s growing from your skin.

  • Take your elastic melt band or a silk scarf.

  • Tie it tightly over the hairline of the wig.

  • Leave it on for 5–10 minutes while you do your makeup or get dressed.

  • Why? Your body heat helps the lace "form" to the shape of your forehead, making it sit flush against the skin.

Step 7: Tint the lace

This is what makes the wig invisible.

  • Take a translucent setting powder that matches your skin tone.

  • Using a fluffy brush, dust it lightly along the lace where it meets your skin.

  • Pro Tip: Also dust a little powder onto the "parting" area of the wig to make the "scalp" look realistic.

Step 8: Style and Blend

  • Use a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush. Avoid fine-tooth combs near the lace, as they can tear the delicate material.

  • If the hairline looks too "straight," you can use a toothbrush and a tiny bit of water (or alcohol-free mousse) to style the baby hairs.

Step 9: Maintenance and Storage

Since you aren't using glue, you can take the wig off easily at night.

  • Storage: Place it on a wig stand or in its original silk bag to keep the lace from wrinkling.

  • Cleaning: Without glue buildup, you only need to wash your lace front every 10–15 wears.

Common Mistakes

  • The "Grey" Ghost: If the lace looks grey or chalky, your setting powder is too light. Use a warmer, skin-matching shade.

  • The Lift: If the temples are lifting, tighten the interior elastic band.

  • The Bulge: If the wig looks "puffy" at the top, your natural hair underneath isn't flat enough.

How long will it last?

A glueless install is designed for daily wear. You put it on in the morning and take it off at night. This preserves the life of the lace and keeps your natural hairline in perfect condition.
