Wigs for Older Women & Ladies Over 50 | Simmys Wigs London
Updated: 4 days ago

The best wigs for an older women are light, comfortable on a sensitive scalp, and natural at the parting. For most ladies over 50, that means a monofilament-top wig in a soft, short-to-mid-length style, in a shade that suits your skin as it is today rather than how it was at 30.
We have been fitting wigs in Hendon for more than 25 years, and many of our clients are in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. This guide covers what we tell them in the salon: which cap to choose, synthetic or human hair, the styles and colours that flatter, and how to make a wig feel comfortable from the first day.
Why hair changes after 50
Most women notice their hair getting finer from their late 40s onwards. Hormonal changes around menopause slow growth, the parting widens, and the crown loses density. Grey hair is also coarser and drier, so it holds a style less well.
None of this needs a full wig straight away. If the thinning is only on top, a hair topper may be all you need (see our guide to the best hair toppers for women). When the thinning is all over, or you simply want a reliable, finished look every morning, a wig is the easier answer.
The cap matters more than the hair
The cap is the part that touches your scalp, so it decides how comfortable the wig feels and how real the parting looks.
Monofilament top: each hair is hand-tied into a fine mesh at the crown, so the parting looks like scalp and can be moved. This is our first recommendation for older women.
Lace front: a fine lace edge along the hairline that lets you wear the hair off the face. Read more in lace front vs skin top wigs.
Hand-tied cap: fully hand-knotted, the softest and lightest option. Ideal for a sensitive or tender scalp.
Open-wefted (capless) cap: rows of hair with gaps between them. Cool and light, and usually the most affordable.
A well-made short wig weighs about as much as a smartphone. If a wig feels heavy or hot within the first few minutes, it is the wrong cap or the wrong size. Check your measurements with our wig size guide.

Styles that suit older women
Short layered crop or pixie: light, cool and almost no upkeep. Shows off the neck and cheekbones.
Soft bob: chin to collar length. The most requested style for ladies over 60 because it frames the face without dragging it down.
Layered shoulder length: for anyone who has always worn longer hair. Layers around the face add lift.
Soft waves or curls: add volume and soften the face, and hide the parting if you prefer.
Very long, very straight or one-length styles tend to pull the face down. A little volume at the crown does the opposite.
Grey, silver and salt-and-pepper wigs
Grey, silver and salt-and-pepper wigs
A grey wig can look more natural than a dark one, because it matches your brows and skin tone as they are today. Look for blended shades with some darker strands through them rather than a flat single grey.
Silver and salt-and-pepper: the most natural choice if your own hair is already grey.
Rooted shades: a slightly darker root makes any colour look as if it grows from your scalp.
Soft browns and warm blondes: a shade or two lighter than your younger colour. Very dark shades can look harsh against older skin.

Making a wig comfortable for everyday wear
Wear a thin, breathable wig cap or liner to protect a sensitive scalp.
Use the adjustable straps inside the cap before reaching for tape or glue.
Choose a hand-tied or open-wefted cap if you run warm.
Give your scalp a break at home in the evening.
Our wig styling service can wash, reset and restyle your wig so it stays looking new.

FAQ
What is the best wig for an older woman? A lightweight wig with a monofilament top in a short or chin-length style suits most older women. The monofilament top gives a natural parting, and a shorter style keeps the wig light and easy to manage.
Are wigs heavy or hot to wear? A well-made modern wig is light. Hand-tied and open-wefted caps let air through, so they stay cool. If a wig feels heavy or hot, the cap type or size is usually wrong.
Should I choose a synthetic or human hair wig after 60? Choose synthetic if you want a wig that keeps its style after washing with almost no effort. Choose human hair if you want the most natural movement and are happy to blow-dry it. Many clients own one of each.
Can a grey wig look natural? Yes. Blended silver and salt-and-pepper shades, especially with a slightly darker root, look more natural than a single flat grey. A grey wig often suits older skin better than a dark one.
How long does a wig last? With daily wear, a good synthetic wig lasts around 4 to 6 months and a human hair wig 12 months or more. Regular washing and professional restyling extend both.
My hair is only thinning on top. Do I need a full wig? Not always. A hair topper clips into your own hair to cover thinning at the crown or parting. If the thinning is all over, a full wig gives a more even result.
Can I try wigs on in London before buying? Yes. Book a free appointment at Simmys Wigs, 8 Parson Street, Hendon, London NW4 1QB. You can take a ready-to-wear wig home the same day, or order a made-to-measure wig in two to four weeks.
